SVAA's goal is to create an environment where every child will play and learn the game. No tryouts are required.
SVAA offers basketball for K-12th graders. Over 5,000 participants play in the winter and summer seasons. K-1st grade is instructional and 2-12th is regulation play. K-2nd grade plays on 8' hoops. SVAA rules require that each player play a minimum of one and one half quarters. Maximum team size is 10 players, no exceptions.
Our winter season (grades K-12) runs from December through February with a tournament the first weekend in March for grades 2-12. Winter games are played mostly on Saturdays, but Sunday if necessary. Winter teams get one 90-minute practice time per week on a week night in an RISD gym (coach will choose). There will be standings and tournaments (grades 2-12).
Our summer season (grades 2 -12 for boys and 2 - 8 for girls) runs mid June to mid July. Teams will play 10 games, one during the week and one on Saturday. Practices and jerseys are not provided for the summer league. There will not be and end of season tournament and standings will not be kept. Summer basketball is team registration only.
Detailed information about SVAA basketball rules can be found in the Coaches' Guide.
